About me
I’m Shaun Humphries — a musician, educator and performance‑confidence specialist with a lifelong passion for helping people grow through music. I trained at Anglia Polytechnic University, completing an MA in Music Performance, and was fortunate to study with inspiring musicians including Nick Hitchens (ENO), Michael Clack, George Reynolds and Helen Vollam. Their influence shaped not only my playing, but also the calm, structured and supportive approach I bring to every lesson and rehearsal.
For over 20 years, I’ve worked as a secondary school music teacher, guiding thousands of young musicians through their first notes, their GCSE and A‑Level journeys, and their earliest performances. I’ve taught across all major exam boards — Eduqas, WJEC, AQA, OCR and Edexcel — and I also create educational resources, several of which have been published with ZigZag Education. My goal has always been the same: to make music accessible, achievable and genuinely enjoyable for every learner.
Alongside teaching, I’m an active performer and conductor. As a tuba player, I’ve performed with ensembles including Banbury Symphony Orchestra, Aylesbury Symphony Orchestra and Trinity Camerata, and earlier in my musical life I was a proud member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. I’ve served as Musical Director for a range of ensembles — currently Hook Norton Brass Band and Bicester Concert Band, and previously Brackley Male Voice Choir, Towcester Studio Band and Great Horwood Silver Band. These roles have given me a deep understanding of ensemble dynamics, leadership, and how to bring out the best in players of all ages and abilities.
My work is grounded in the belief that confidence is just as important as technique. That’s why I also trained as a Hypnotherapist, Life Coach and NLP Practitioner, specialising in performance confidence, focus and mindset. Whether someone is preparing for an exam, returning to music after a long break, or stepping onto a stage for the first time, I help them develop the mental tools to perform with clarity and self‑belief.
Across everything I do — teaching, conducting, performing and coaching — my aim is simple: to create opportunities for young and aspiring musicians to thrive. I break learning into clear, manageable steps, celebrate progress, and build an environment where students feel supported, capable and excited to grow.
